Joshua was in no particular hurry to have his suspicions corroborated, but before twenty-four more hours had passed, Eli Tibbetts was back at the store, curling his index finger balefully. Swallowing down his dread, Joshua slowly untied his apron and called out to his clerk.

“Charlie! There’s a shipment from Saint Louis that’s come in ahead of time. DuPont’s powder, I think. I’ll be back in an hour.”

He was following Tibbetts out of the store when he caught his own reflection, lightly stamped by the late-afternoon sun on the shop window. He stopped where he was, the better to study those familiar features, now so estranged. The eyes, buried so deep in their sockets.

“We don’t have all day,” growled Tibbetts.
